Students across all age groups struggle to learn due to various reasons. But one reason often overlooked is the lack of executive functioning skills. At Goode Learning, we believe that fostering these skills is a pivotal step in creating successful learners.
Executive functions are mental skills that help us get things done. They are the command and control center of our brains, guiding everything we do, from remembering details and managing time to multitasking, reasoning, and problem-solving. These skills fall into three main areas: working memory, cognitive flexibility, and inhibitory control.
Before delving into strategies to improve executive functioning skills, it's necessary to understand their role in learning. These skills allow us to:
1. Manage time
2. Organize thoughts and materials
3. Plan and prioritize tasks
4. Remember details
5. Switch focus
6. Curb impulsive behaviour
Imagine studying for your finals without the ability to focus, organize information, or remember what you just learned. It would be almost impossible. That's why it's crucial to develop these skills early in life.
At Goode Learning, we've found that these skills, which are foundational to successful learning, can be honed with the right guidance.
Working memory relates to the ability to hold on to information and use it in our heads. Encourage students to visualize the information or make connections to something they already know. Physical activities, such as clapping to a rhythm or pattern, and memory-enhancing games can also stimulate working memory.
Cognitive flexibility is the ability to think about multiple concepts simultaneously or shift seamlessly between tasks or problems. Brainstorming, mind mapping, and games that require strategic thinking can help nurture cognitive flexibility. Encouraging students to learn a new language or musical instrument also improves cognitive flexibility.
Inhibitory control is the ability to control our attention, behaviour, thoughts, and emotions. Building inhibitory control can curb impulsivity and help students remain focused. Teaching children meditation, yoga, or breathing exercises can help. Also, games that require waiting for a turn can cultivate patience.
Here are a few strategies to develop executive functioning skills in students:
1. Model appropriate behaviour: Show students how to behave in different situations. This could be how to take turns in a conversation, how to react when frustrated, or how to use an agenda to plan tasks.
2. Set clear, achievable goals: Break down larger tasks into smaller, manageable ones and guide students on completing them. This helps in managing time and setting priorities.
3. Routine and structure: A predictable daily routine can help students understand time management and sequencing.
4. Use of tools and resources: Teach students to use calendars, planners, and organizational apps to manage their tasks and time.
5. Positive reinforcement: Praising efforts and improvements, no matter how small, boosts self-confidence and encourages further progress.
Executive function skills are integral to independent learning and academic success. But mastering these skills doesn't happen overnight. It takes patience, guidance, and the right tools. At Goode Learning, we offer executive functioning skills support tailored to every student's unique needs.
